This bent shank design originated in England where such hooks are used as bait hooks. Some fly tiers like the proportions of the short shank and wide gape. The bent shank and line of pull creates a very positive outpoint angle resulting in easy hook ups. This makes them very useful for egg patterns. Many egg hooks are down eyed hooks which negates the effective gape and interferes with hooking ability.
