The Community Spirit

Community is the very heart of fly fishing and for every angler the community spirit is found in the knowledge passed on, the waters protected, and in keeping up old traditions while starting new ones. From sharing flies stream side or in the parking area, to swapping river reports and sharing what's been noted on the water, fly fishing thrives because people show up for one another.

While in the shop the other day, I paused when I heard a few customers catching up with some of the crew. They were sharing life moments such as what they've been up to, who they've seen and haven't yet heard from, but then the talk turned to the next fishing outing and when they would next meet up on the river or in the shop. For them and many others the shop has been more than a place to buy flies or get information; it’s been a gathering point where anglers learn, connect, and share in the Catskill waters and fly fishing itself.

The above photo is Walt Dette and his shop in 1928, located at the now defunct Esso station on the corner of Stewart Ave and Old 17 in Roscoe. The bicycle and busted car tire harken back to days of old and we can pause in how far transportation has evolved and how quickly one can get to the river now a days. But this photo reflects more: it is the start of a community that is 98 years strong. Our community spirit is that shared commitment to each other, to the rivers, and to do things the right way. This is what keeps fly fishing strong today and the future.

We love our home waters and consider stewardship an active part of all we do and appreciate all your support and assistance. We are happy to see the next generation of river stewards rising up, sharing the love of the natural resources and not only a voice, but a hand in action to practice responsible recreation. All of us have the shared responsibility to be the voice of the waters and collectively, we can take a stand.
